The Bird

Today was a really hard day. Actually, yesterday was a difficult day, last night was rough, and this morning started out awful, so things just kept compounding.  I was frustrated with the kids and taking that frustration out in the way I spoke with them.  I was looking ahead at everything I needed to accomplish for the day and feeling overwhelmed.

And when it rains, it pours, right?

My oldest daughter came in and told me there was a wounded bird in our backyard.  Now, normally I’m all about rescuing animals.  But this particular morning we had less than 30 minutes before we needed to be at the dentist and no one was ready to go.

I went out to check on the bird, and there were feathers scattered everywhere.  I’m not sure if our dogs got ahold of the bird (she did not look like I would expect if they had!) or what had occurred, but she did not look like she was going to make it if I left her out there very long in this Texas heat.  I checked with a neighbor who put me in touch with a local wildlife guy, and I dropped the bird off (for him to pick up later) at the Animal Control Center.

As we headed to the dental appointment, God got ahold of my heart.  I heard the whispering voice of His Spirit reminding me that the God who cares for fallen birds cares for the smallest details of my life too.

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God.

Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered.

Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.”

I needed that bird today. I needed the reminder that my Father is watching over me, guiding and protecting me.  He knows the specifics of my circumstances and can use even the challenges to accomplish His purpose in me.

What challenges are you facing? Remember that the God who watches the birds is watching over you!
