Having Lots of Kids Doesn’t Make Me a Great Mom

As a matter of fact, I don’t actually think I’m a great mom.  I have great moments (thank you, Jesus!), but I also have some significant I can’t believe I just did that … again! moments.  But I frequently have people look at me and my crew of kiddos and make a comment to the effect of, “I don’t know how you do it! You must be Super Mom!”

But I see the inside story.  I know the truth.

I also know how we work as women.  We look at other moms, or other women, and we see the “outside story,” or the Social Media story … and we compare.

But do you know what I have come to realize over time?

No one’s journey is exactly like mine … or yours! We each have specific tasks, blessings, challenges, and responsibilities.  We cannot compare our inside story with someone else’s outside story, which is all we can see.

Actually, we should not compare at all!

Mama, you are blessed! And God chose YOU to mother those little (or not so little ones) beside you! He does not expect perfection, but He does expect you to look to Him, lean on him, and trust Him to work in and through you to raise the children He gave you! So next time you are tempted to compare yourself with another mom, take your eyes off her and look instead at HIM!

What does this mean practically?

  • Don’t compare … see yourself as God sees you – the perfect Mama for your little ones!
  • Recognize that your journey is yours alone, but that God has given you the strength for each step of the way as you look to Him. Thank God for your current circumstances, no matter how challenging they may seem in the moment.
  • Remember that God has a plan for your children … and you are a huge part of that plan!
  • Grow … when you make mistakes, learn from them, get back up, and keep going!
  • Pray! Nothing can combat the temptations of the world – in our lives or our children’s – like prayer!
  • Keep your eyes on Jesus … His opinion of you is the only one that truly matters!

Are you struggling with discouragement or wearniness today? Here is a post I wrote on Encouragement for the Weary Mama!

What tips do you have to offer other Mamas for those moments when we are tempted to compare ourselves with others?
