Dirty Diapers for God

I was doing the math today and realized I have likely changed over 30,000 diapers over the course of raising my children … and that just includes their diapers, not all the diapers I’ve changed during the time I worked in a daycare, the many services in church nursery, or anytime I watched a friend’s children! Wow … that is a lot of diapers!

I don’t say that to pat myself on the back. In fact, I was thinking about this because I was considering how much of my time is spent in seemingly mundane tasks. There have been many, many days where it feels like the life I’m living has little to no spiritual value. Sometimes I struggle remembering the “big picture vision” of raising children!

But as I was reading God’s Word today I came once again across Colossians 3:23 –

Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.

And do you know the context of that verse? Relationships! The Apostle Paul is telling husbands, wives, children, and servants all how to relate to others. Do you know what I realized? I can change dirty diapers for the Lord! I can clean up a million messes of spilled milk and cheerios, sweep the floor for the dozenth time today, read a book to my little ones, help kids work out an argument, wash dishes, and fold laundry all for Jesus.

The next verse in Colossians gives us the why:

Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

As we serve our children day in and day out, it can be exhausting, challenging, and frustrating. But it can also be a tremendous source of joy as we realize that we are serving Jesus Christ as we minister to our family, and He is the one who determines our reward!

What is your struggle today? What task seems overwhelming, or what chore seems pointless when you think of living life in light of eternity? How can an adjustment in perspective help make the tasks more meaningful?

Let’s focus today on remembering that every task we do for our family is service to the King of Kings!

Working on joyfully serving,

Stephani
